Carroll County is located on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. It is bounded by Patrick County on the southeast, Floyd County on the east, Pulaski and Wythe Counties on the north, Grayson County and Galax on the west, and Surry County, North Carolina on the south. The Town of Hillsville, which is the county’s only incorporated town, is the seat of the county government. Carroll County is located 68 miles southwest of Roanoke, Virginia, 111 miles east of Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee, and 65 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Average annual temperatures are Summer - 64.99° and Winter - 41.33°. The average annual rainfall is 46.8 inches. Land area in the county totals 494 square miles (316,160 acres). Most of the gently rolling land is devoted to agriculture and open space. The highest point in the county is Fishers Peak, which has an elevation of 3,570 feet, while Lovill's Creek, where it crosses the Virginia/North Carolina line, is the lowest point at 1,100 feet. Carroll County is ideally located in relationship to the interstate highway system. I-77 comes through the county and intersects with I-81 in Wythe County 12 miles to the north.
